Aerobraking is a spaceflight technique wherein an orbiting spacecraft brushes against the top of a planetary atmosphere. The friction of the atmosphere against the surface of the spacecraft slows down and lowers the craft's orbital altitude.

According to the KSP wiki page for Jool (http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Jool), a heat shield is needed to aerobrake from Kerbin to Jool. It also suggests diving as deep as 155 km altitude over Jool for that particular aerobrake maneuver. My Jool missions haven't used aerobraking, and have landed 3 bases so far rather nicely.

If you push aerobraking too far, you've lost the spacecraft, so one has to be cautious.
